Home Systems: Great Deals from Dell

Portable Computer Devices and Electronic Medical records systems.

Are they a natural fit, or are they a pipe dream? Questions to ask.

  • What happens if you drop them?

  • What happens to data if someone walks off with the mobile device?

  • How do you sterilize or clean a portable device between patient visits?  Do you wash you hands before or after using it and examining the patient?

  • Is wireless data transmission safely encrypted?  Of can it be hijacked in mid air?

  • What about blind spots in data transmission?

  • Is an  end-user really going to use it at the bedside? Most people that utilize technology are as Geoffrey Moore refers to them, from the "conservative majority".  They want and need a totally turn-key system or device.  The don't want to look stupid fumbling with a portable device in front of a patient.

  • Who honestly is going to use the portable device at the bedside?  Your "early adopters" and gadget junkies, or all of you healthcare providers?

  • Portable devices are fine for simple tasks such as vital signs and orders, but often the thought process for record completion usually isn't performed at the bedside anyway.

  • What is the life expectancy of a portable device?

  • Does the portable device operate off of Windows 98 or Windows 2000, or Windows CE?  Windows CE is a scaled down version of a normal Windows PC operating system.  Often other software isn't compatible with Win CE.  This can take an additional software interface.
